Richard Bohun Baker papers, 1780-1783.

Papers consist of estate accounts, military records, and a list of slaves. Account statement (begins 25 Jan., 1783) for the estate of Richard Bohun Baker (1736-1783) lists estate expenditures for funeral charges and other expenses. The verso contains the "Muster Roll of Capt. Baker's Company in the 2nd Regiment Commanded by Colonel Francis Marion, 29 March 1780." Roll lists commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates; the time of their enlistment or commission; their length of service; and remarks on casualties and deserters. Other military records of Richard Bohun Baker (1757-1837) include a "Return of the Officers, [prisoners of war at Haddrell's Point], and their Servants" (n.d.); a "Return of Officers, Servants, Dead, Deserted, and Present of the 2nd So. Carolina Rgt." (n.d.); fragments of lists and muster rolls; a note (n.d.) concerning payments for "legionary officers"; and "A Return for Rum and Sugar for the officers of the 2nd So. Car. Regt. from April the 19th to May the 24th." The verso of the rum and sugar return bears a list of slaves.

Owner of Archdale Hall, a plantation in Dorchester County (S.C.) which had previously been owned by his grandfather William Baker (d. 1718) and great-grandfather Richard Baker (d. 1698). Richard Bohun Baker (1736-1783) was the son of Richard Baker (d. 1752) and Mary Bohun (daughter of Nicholas Bohun). The 2nd South Carolina was organized in summer 1775 at Charleston to consist of ten companies from eastern South Carolina. On Nov. 4, 1775, it was adopted into the Continental Army and assigned to Southern Department.
